Max Protetch Gallery congratulates Siah Armajani, this year’s recipient of the annual McKnight Foundation Distinguished Artist Award, honoring a lifetime of achievement by Minnesota artists. Simple Materials Are Transformed in Site-Specific Installations at MASS MoCA

Group Exhibition Material World Opens April 24, 2010

(North Adams, MA) Beginning April 24, 2010, MASS MoCA's second- and third- floor galleries will be transformed by a series of immersive, site-specific installations made from unexpectedly humble materials; the artists of Material World will use paper, plastic, rope, fishing line and more to alter the existing spaces or create autonomous environments within MASS MoCA's galleries. The exhibition reflects two trends in current art practice that have been evolving since the early 20th century: the embrace of non-art materials and the artwork's engagement with both time and space. Michael Beutler, Orly Genger, Tobias Putrih, Alyson Shotz, Dan Steinhilber, and collaborative team Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen are all known in part for their use of simple materials. Material World will be on view through February 27, 2011. More Info

Oliver Herring's TASK across the Midwest, featured on NPR

Oliver Herring's TASK, an ongoing series of participatory performances that seek to involve and energize local communities, is appearing across the Midwest this spring in a variety of guises and incarnations. To read more about how TASK works and to find out how to bring TASK to your community, visit the TASK blog at
oliverherringtask.wordpress.com. Also, hear more on TASK from NPR atwww.wglt.org/newsroom/.

While TASK performances are more structured events organized by Herring and involving selected participants, TASK Parties are events that are open to participation by any and all. Often organized independently by communities and universities, word of TASK parties spreads virally. Participants engage in group performance and art-making in a celebratory atmosphere.

A major TASK Party will be held at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on March 20th. This event will be held at Gerrard Hall, a beautiful, old, bi-level building in the heart of campus. Also, after last fall’s West Bank TASK Party, a second, larger TASK Party is scheduled for Minneapolis, Minnesota. TASK Twin Cities will take place on April 20th, inside the Student Center at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). TASK Twin Cities is organized by Bethel University with help from MCAD.

A February 6 TASK Party at Illinois State University has led to plans to hold events at 10 new regional venues, including TASK Parties at Fieldcrest High School in Mimonk, Illinois on April 23rd and Lincoln College, Lincoln, Illinois on April 24th.

On May 15th, two TASK Parties are planned to be held simultaneously and linked to each other via webcam: Tisket TASKet in Columbus, Ohio and the St. Louis TASK Party at The University of Cincinnati DAAP, in St. Louis.

Hear more on TASK from NPR (Illinois). The segment was aired on February 24: www.wglt.org/newsroom.

Ann Pibal at The Suburban, Chicago

Ann Pibal will be the subject of a solo exhibition at The Suburban in Chicago, March 14 - April 25. The show will include a new series of works on paper that incorporate tape and collage.

Stay tuned also for more information about Pibal's upcoming show in the Max Protetch Project Space, April 1 - May 1.

Betty Woodman at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

As part of the multi-venue exhibition Ceramic Interactions: Contemporary Explorations of the Collections from March 31–July 11, Betty Woodman will premiere new work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Inspired by the Lansdowne Drawing Room, an 18th-century English period room that contains both real Etruscan and Roman vases as well as Wedgewood copies of them, Woodman has created an installation comprised of wall/relief and sculptural elements. These new works incorporate vases, images of vases, and architectural elements to create a theatre of multi-layered art historical reference and bold formal innovation.

This is one of 95 exhibitions that are part of INDEPENDENCE: The 44th Annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference taking place in Philadelphia from March 31–April 3. The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA is serving as the onsite liaison and organizing body of the exhibitions program. For a complete list of programmed exhibitions, visit: www.theclaystudio.org

Also on view in Philadelphia will be Betty Woodman's solo exhibition at Locks Gallery, which runs from March 23–April 24. Woodman will give a gallery talk on the evening of Thursday, March 25, and there will be an opening reception on Friday, April 2.

Also, we are pleased to announce that Woodman will present an installation of new work in the Max Protetch Gallery Project Space in May. More news regarding this exhibition will follow in coming weeks.

Finally, we wish to congratulate both Betty and George Woodman, who will be receiving the Anderson Ranch National Artist Award this summer. The ceremony will take place on July 14; both artists will present an exhibition at Anderson Ranch to celebrate the award. For more information, please visit andersonranch.org.

Saul Chernick at Franklin Art Works

Franklin Art Works is pleased to announce solo exhibitions by Megan Vossler, Saul Chernick, and Kwabena Slaughter. The exhibitions will open to the public with a reception on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 7 to 9pm. Vossler and Chernick will be in attendance. Admission is free.

Each artist's work addresses the dynamic relationships between figure(s) and landscape.

The exhibitions will remain on view through Saturday, March 20, 2010.

In the Project Space Saul Chernick: Devotionals

Saul Chernick's elaborate drawings display an exquisite use of line, executed in ink that appears like prints. Each drawing traverses this tie to the past yet remain solidly contemporary, through subject, composition or format.

“In some respects I’m trying to see what happens when an older model of drawing is infused with contemporary ideas. In An Autumn Ride (2008), [above] the proportions of the paper are the same as a flat screen TV. This creates a visual tension because the artists who developed and practiced this graphic style would never have composed images to work with these dimensions… The narrative is similarly altered—it doesn’t quite hit the same notes a typical demon slaying might.”

Gallery News - December 2009

Max Protetch Gallery is pleased to announce Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With, a major new installation project by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle opening at MASS MoCA Saturday, December 12. The project will be on view through October 31, 2010.

Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With is based upon Mies van der Rohe's uncompleted project, The 50x50 House (1951). In it a square structure open to view on all four sides through glass walls. The house will be constructed at approximately half scale and inverted, the ceiling of the original becoming the sculpture's floor, the floor becoming the ceiling, and all interior elements such as Mies-designed furniture and partition walls installed upside down. Gravity will seem held at bay. Also on view will be Manglano-Ovalle's Always After (2006), a film that serves as a prelude to the sculptural installation.

An exhibition of new sculptural work by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle opens at Max Protetch Gallery on Saturday, February 6. Turning the upside down 50x50 House into an aquarium, Manglano-Ovalle builds on the theme established in the MASS MoCA exhibition.

For more information on the show please visit MASS MoCA's website
